Herbert G. Schwab, 79, of Canton, GA passed away Tuesday, February 16, 2021 at Piedmont Hospital
Atlanta.
The family will receive friends and family on Saturday, February 20, 2021 from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. at Canton Funeral Home. Inurnment services will be held at a
later date at Arlington National Cemetery.
Mr. Schwab proudly served in the U.S. Army where he retired after a 30 year distinguished career.
During his time in the Army, Mr. Schwab rose to the rank of Sergeant Major and received numerous
awards, medals and commendations, including the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal and Army
Commendation Medal. He spent the end of his career working in the Pentagon where he acted as an
advisor to the Deputy Chief of Staff for Personnel on enlisted soldier issues. He then immediately went
into the civil service helping former Army soldiers transition into civilian life. Doing this, he worked
another 20 years again receiving numerous commendations for his service. He took great pride in the
fact that in his 50 years of combined service, his primary job was working “for the soldier”.
In addition to his career, Mr. Schwab was also extremely proud to be German. He moved to the United
States as a child from Passau, Germany. He enjoyed traditional German food and followed soccer
faithfully, particularly his beloved Bayern Munich football club. He enjoyed watching all sports as well as
westerns. But more than any of that, he loved spending time with his family, especially his 3
grandchildren. They were his pride and joy.
The love of his life was his wife Juanita. They were married for 57 years. He often said she “saved him”
but, in truth, they both knew they saved each other. They were an inspiration to those who knew them
as the ideal relationship of mutual love, respect and compromise. Mr. Schwab would say his
compromise was doing whatever made his wife happy. Their only child, Steve, benefited from this
unconditional love throughout his life. And this was passed through to his wife Chanda and their three
children, Sam, Mallory and Wyatt.
Mr. Schwab was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert and Paula Schwab. He is survived by his wife,
Juanita; son, Steve Schwab and his wife, Chanda; grandchildren, Sam, Mallory and Wyatt Schwab;
brother, Billy Wilds; sisters, Elisabeth Henning and her husband Larry, and Dorothy Ogier; cousin,
Gerhard Schwab of Munich, Germany and numerous nieces, nephews and other family members on
both sides of the family.
Due to COVID-19 masks are suggested for the visitation.
