Janie Lewis Nickens

Janie Nickens, age 97, passed away June 30, 2018.

Mrs. Nickens was born in Somerset, Kentucky and grew up in Savannah where her father was head of the Agriculture Department of Atlantic Coastline Railroad.  She graduated from Savannah High School in 1939 where she was voted “Most Likely to Succeed”.  She was a gifted pianist and artist.  She sold many of her paintings that were exhibited at the Pirate House on River Street. She was a former member of the DAR chapter in Savannah and of the Savannah Garden Club.

She loved to read and play golf; but above all she loved her Lord and she loved her grandchildren.  Mrs. Nickens was a member of First Baptist Church Roswell.

She was preceded in death by her son, Ned Hoynes who passed away two weeks prior to her death.  She was also preceded in death by her two husbands, Colonel William Bent Hoynes USAF-SAC and Ray Nickens; parents, Victor Wallace Lewis and Bertha Gover Lewis; and her brother, John Lewis who was a nuclear physicist in the United States Navy.

She is survived by her daughter, Jane Hoynes Waddell (Chick); son, Spencer Hoynes (Sheila); grandchildren, Zachary James Waddell (Colleen), Mackenzie Jane Waddell, and Jason Hoynes (Schuyler); and one great granddaughter.  She was particularly proud when Zack chose to follow in her father’s footsteps and attended Auburn University.

Interment was private in Macedonia Memorial Park alongside her son, Ned.
