Luis Mariano Alanis, 57, of Canton passed away after a brief illness on January 27, 2021.
From El Paso, Texas, Luis also lived in Oklahoma, Louisiana, New Mexico, and Arizona before settling in the Atlanta area. He worked in retail for years, spending many years managing CVS stores before eventually starting his career at Shoppers World. Over his career, Luis formed many strong bonds with coworkers that have lasted beyond his years with any individual company.
As hard as Luis worked, he also loved having fun. The one thing he may have loved almost more than his family was NASCAR. Taking his first camping trip to Talladega in 2007, Luis began creating his own group to share in the shenanigans. Until April of 2020, Luis never missed a camping trip and would start planning the next as soon as he returned home. In the last few years, he and some of his closest friends and NASCAR diehards had ventured to new tracks, experiencing new things and creating long lasting memories.
Second to NASCAR in Luis’s book would have to be the pool table. Luis enjoyed having friends over to his house to have a few drinks and play a few games. In 2017, he was asked to join a few friends on their pool league, Straight 8’s. He enjoyed every Thursday when the team would meet up for practice before the matches started. Through the league, Luis made incredible friendships that went far beyond the pool room.
Luis enjoyed many parts of his life. He never met a stranger; he found the good in everyone. He was an avid country western dancer and would start dancing as soon as a good tune started playing, particularly George Strait. He enjoyed playing trivia with his friends on a team fittingly named “Challenged.” The team enjoyed the company of their friends more than being the smartest group in the room, although winning always made it more fun. And, even though he was teased relentlessly for it, Luis was a fan of his Dallas Cowboys.
But above all, Luis’s family was the most important thing to him. Anyone that knew him knew how much he missed his parents and when his nephews graduated high school, the man spoke of nothing but them. Luis was predeceased by his parents Mariano and Carmen Alanis and his survived by sisters, Lilly (Efren) Avalos and Laura Alanis, and nephews Noah and Nick Avalos, all from El Paso, Texas.
