Robert W. Jones, age 84 died September 14th, 2017 peacefully at home surrounded by loved ones.
Mr. Jones is predeceased by his wife, Agnes E. Jones, Brother Kenneth Jones of Cape Cod, MA, and Sister Elaine Perrotti of Virginia Beach, VA. He is survived by his daughters Sharon Johnson and Patricia Poole. He leaves behind three grandchildren, Monica Rose Poole, Dever Francis Johnson and Oliver Rand Johnson.
He grew up in Reading, MA, the eldest son of Rose Dever Jones and Wilmot H. Jones. He attended Reading High School. He obtained a BS in finance and accounting in 1954 from Boston College. He then served in the United States Army in Germany as a member of a Field Artillery Unit and later a Photo-Reconnaissance Section. Awarded the German Occupation Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. He was discharged as a Specialist Third Class.
Returning to civilian life, he entered Boston College Law School in 1957. In 1959 married his high school sweetheart, Agnes Edmands. After which he worked during the day as an insurance adjuster while continuing to attend Law school at night. He obtained his JD in 1961. He accepted a commission to serve as a Judge Advocate General in the Air Force 1963. He attended Squadron Officer School in 1965, Air Command & Staff College 1973, Air War College, 1977.
Starting his career in Albany GA, He rose quickly through the ranks. He was stationed in Germany, Canada, Vietnam, Holland, Texas, Colorado, Virginia, Alabama, and Ohio. Robert made Colonel while stationed at the Pentagon in 1981. He enjoyed being a JAG, appearing before the US Supreme Court. He Retired from the Air Force in 1989.
He was awarded the Legion of Merit July of 1983 and again in August of 1989, Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, AF Commendation Medal, Distinguished- Presidential Unit Citation, AF Outstanding Unit Award with Valor, AF Organizational Excellence Award, Good Conduct Medal, Occupation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and AF overseas Short Tour and Long Tour Ribbons, AF Longevity Service, Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross, and Vietnam Campaign medal.
Upon retirement from the Airforce after 26 years of service, Robert went to work for the 103 Congress as a special assistant to Congressman Henry Hyde, (R) Judiciary Committee. While serving there he was proud of his contributions on behalf of veterans and as a contributing author of the Articles of Impeachment served upon President Clinton in 1998. He traveled to South America to investigate the illegal drug trade, to China regarding illegal production and importing of counterfeit goods.
Robert was an inveterate reader, a daily runner for most of his lifetime, enjoyed dragging his daughters to various 5k’s , running them into the ground, adding to his medals. He loved the ‘volksmarches’ in Germany where after a really long walk, there was always beer and brats. He took up skiing in his mid 40’s and skied Breckenridge Co. He enjoyed ‘nature walks’ with the grand kids who subsequently realized his nature ‘facts’ were not to be relied upon. He loved to get his daughters up at the crack of dawn for bonding time while doing yardwork. He made up bedtime stories- where ‘Daddy Good Guy” was always the hero. He was loved, admired and will be missed.
A memorial service will be held 11:00AM Monday, September 25, 2017 at Our Lady of the Mountains Catholic Church in Jasper, GA. Inurnment will be held at Georgia National Cemetery Monday, September 25, 2017 at 2:00PM with full military honors.
