Roberta "Bert" Ann Madden McVay, age 77, of Canton, Georgia, passed away Friday, December 12, 2014, at her home. Funeral services are scheduled for Tuesday, December 16, 2014 at10:30 at St. Peter Chanel Catholic Church with Father Desmond Drummer officiating. The family will receive friends at the Church during the hour prior to the funeral service. Inurnment will take place at 10:00 AM on Friday, December19, 2014, at Macedonia Memorial Park.

Bert was born on September 27, 1937 in Providence, Rhode Island. The family moved to Miami when she was age four. When she was eight, they moved to New Orleans.

In 1958, Bert graduated from Holy Cross School of Nursing in South Bend, Indiana, and enjoyed a career in nursing for fifty years. In 1977, she joined the nursing staff at Willingway Hospital, specializing in the field of chemical dependency. She was program director at the Hospital when she and her husband Frank moved to Watkinsville in 1991 to join the nursing staff at St. Mary's Hospital in Athens. In 1996 they moved to Cherokee County to join the nursing staff of Northwest Home Health Services and then the nursing staff at Wellstar Kennestone Hospital, from which she retired in 2008.

Bert and her husband Frank enjoyed travel in the United States and to many countries. She kept up with collegiate sports and considered herself the biggest fan of Notre Dame in Cherokee County. She also enjoyed sewing, reading, walking the family dogs, college reunions and, in recent years, took painting classes. Bert was a member of St. Peter Chanel Catholic Church and was active in the Church all of her life. She had a keen sense of humor and was grateful for the life God had given her.

Bert succumbed with her husband at her side after a lengthy battle with fibromyelosis. She was predeceased by her parents Thomas Madden and Jennie L. Walsh and by her sister Mary Margaret Madden. She is survived by her husband, Frank David McVay of Canton, her brother, the Rev. Thomas J. Madden, Society of Jesuits, her sister-in-law, Kipling L. McVay-Stubbs, and numerous cousins.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Jesuit Spirituality Center, Jesuits of New Orleans Province, P. O. Box C, Grand Coteau, Louisiana 70541 or to St. Peter Chanel Catholic Church, 11330 Woodstock Rd, Roswell, Georgia 30075.
