CELEBRATING THE LIFE

OF

THOMAS DUNCAN MACMULLAN

Tom was one of the most unique and interesting people you would ever expect to meet on your journey through life.  He passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, March 23, at age 77, after a long and courageous struggle with Advanced Peripheral Artery Disease.  He was born in Butler, Pennsylvania on December 16, 1941.  Tom was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and uncle.

He was a successful Pittsburgh attorney and businessman, who enjoyed being an adventurous sportsman.  He ran 5Ks every weekend, hiked 14,000 feet summits in Colorado, skied the most challenging slopes, biked, hiked, and took up horseback riding and jumping in his retirement.   He loved a challenge and even tried helicopter skiing, scuba diving with the sharks in the Bahamas and ran marathons in New York, Los Angeles, and London.

His morning routine include a stop for coffee and The Wall Street Journal. He never turned down an opportunity to chat with employees (most who blossomed in to unique friendships) of Publix and the convenience store. He had a gift for remembering people and places and could converse on and had an interest in just about any topic.

Tom was a 1963 graduate of Colby College in Waterville, Maine and a 1966 graduate of the University of Pittsburgh Law School. During the Vietnam War, 1966-1972, he served in the United States Marine Corp Reserve.   He practiced labor and employment law for 40 years and developed an expertise on coal, natural gas and timber when he became associated with Rowland Land Company.  He was employed as Rowland’s chairman of their board.  He also served as a volunteer on three homeowner’s associations, two in Pennsylvania and one in Milton, Georgia.  He was also on the Murrysville Planning Commission in Murrysville, Pennsylvania where he lived with his wife, and two daughters, for 25 years.

Tom is survived by his wife of 50 years, Carole Ankeny MacMullan, two daughters Jessica MacMullan Kuhn of Cumming, Georgia and Alison Beth MacMullan of Baltimore, Maryland; one granddaughter, Olivia, who is a high school junior, and many nieces and nephews and three exchange students, Emma Berg Jonsson from Sweden, Nicole Caffier from Germany and Natalia Echague Urquhart from Paraguay who were like daughters to him.

In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to his favorite local charity, Assistance League of Atlanta, P.O. Box 920250, Peachtree Corners, GA. 30010-0250.

The memorial service will take place on Friday, April 5, 2019 at 11:00 AM at St Aidan’s Episcopal Church, 13560 Cogburn Road, Milton, GA 30004.
